Jon Ferrante’s involvement with Shih Tzu dates to 1970, when he established the House of Visconti Shih Tzu.  

 

The point of departure in this study is, of course, the records of small breeds of dogs known to have been cherished by the Lamas of Tibet and presented by their emissaries as “tribute gifts” to nobility in adjoining countries, including members of the Royal Family of China.  The historical perspective emerges clearly in this superbly researched and meticulously documented work on the Oriental breed that continued its development only because it came under the aegis of Tzu Hsi, Dowager Empress of China.

 

Complete listings of champions and other title holders, discussions of important dogs of many countries in addition to those of the United States, a summing up of the significant points of the new breed Standard and the author’s personal observations, special chapters by Peggy Hogg and Richard Paisley, and scores of photos are combined in this fascinating and delightfully informative volume.   As the title promises, this book truly delineates the heritage of the Shih Tzu.
